LATE SPORTING
TEA TEADEE SCOEE.S
AGUA CALIENTE SPRINT
Although the news was not cabled to the Dominion, a special message to the Sydney "Daily Telegraph" announced that Tea Trader was successful in winning the Springtime Handicap at Aqua Caliente last Sunday week, March 19, beating a high-class field of sprinters in smart, time. ' This was liis owner, Mr. D. J. Davis's first success on his present trip to the States. In an earlier start Tea Trader ran last, but' in the Springtime Handicap he showed his true form. In running the six; furlongs in lmin llsee he was only three-fifths of a second outside the record for the course over the distance. ' - • Joe Flores, who finished second to Tea Trader, was one of the best of the Western-owned three-year-olds in the Stakes last year, being beaten only by Bahamas in the Aqua Caliente Derby, and being one of the leaders for about six furlongs in last year's Aqua Caliente Handicap, won by Pbar Lap. Quickaway, who was third, has been the sensation of this season's racing at Aqua Calientc, as until his defeat in the Springtime Handicap he had won six races in succession for his owner, John D. Speckels, jun., whose great- I grandfather imported the Sydney Cup winner Darebin to California about thirty years ago. He was the winner of the sprint on February 19 in which Tea Trader ran last, and in that effort ho established the course record of lmin 10 2-ssec for the distance.
Tea Trader was produced again last Sunday in th& Meteor Handicap, six furlongs, and he finished second to Sun Dot, with 'Sharp Thoughts third. This result was apparently cabled to New Zealand, but it was not in the message handled at Wellington yesterday. •
