TRIP TO SYDNEY
STOWAWAY'S ERROR
Acting on the impression that the vessel was sailing for the North Island, Francis Edward Ryan, an engine-driver, aged 55, stowed away on the s.Si Canadian Scottish at Bluff. He surrendered to the captain after the vessel had left port. Ryan was surprised to learn that the ship was Headed for Australia. Not allowed to land at Sydney, Ryan was sent back to New Zealand, and appeared before Mr. E. Page, S.M., at the Magistrate's Court today on a charge of stowing away. Sub-Inspector Martin said that the accused had been looking for work in the South Island. At Bluff he heard that the Canadian Scottish was sailing for the North Island. He decided that this was a good opportunity to get to Wellington, and hid himself on the vessel. Contrary to the accused's anticipations, the Canadian Scottish sailed for Australia. The authorities would not permit him to land there, and he was returned to New Zealand. The expense incurred was £7 10s. The Magistrate fined the acqused £5, in default 21 days' imprisonment.
