MISSED HIS BOAT

"I -was drunk and asleep when the ship went out—all my belongings are on board," said James Edward Hornibrook, a fireman, aged 29, when he pleaded guilty before Mr. E. Page, S.M., at the Magistrate's Court today to a charge of unlawfully deserting from the s.s. Piako.

Sub-Inspector Martin said that the accused was a duly articled seaman on the s.s. Piako, which was at Wellington on March 11. Ho deserted the ship on that day, and was arrested on the wharf this morning by Constable Fletcher. An expenditure of £1' Is had been incurred by the shipping company in engaging a man to take the place of the accused.

The accused was convicted and ordered to make good the expenditure incurred, and also to pay Court costs, 10s. The Magistrate gave him a fortnight in which to find the money.
