S.P.C.A. DAY

The Wellington Society for the Preven-. tion of Cruelty to Animals has beett' granted permission by the City Council to conduct a street collection on Thursday^ and it is hoped that a generous response'" will be forthcoming. It is essential that; the efforts towards prevention. o£ cruelty' to animals^ should not be relaxed, but^ the depression has seriously affected the* society's funds, and therefore it Is making; this special appeal for the generous assist-, ance of a warm-hearted public.

Among the many reforms which, tlies society is strenuously working for are tha: following:—The universal adoption of tha.; most painless method of slaughtering? animals; an improvement in the type of ■. wagon used for conveying cattle, so as*. to prevent, for instance, the possibility^ which at present exists of animals beingi suspended by their horns during hours* of transport; the speeding up of trans*! port so as to eliminate the suffering^ caused by animals being delayed on the; road. Cases have frequently come under;the society's notice of "bobby" calves* being tied up at the roadside' for hours, waiting for collection, by lorry, without nourishment or protection from sun, windw, or rain. . ;

For these and many other works th% society appeals £o the people for help,antl.it feels it will not appeal in vain." Lven small contributions, if given by many* people, will help, tremendously. '.
