GREEK ANNIVERSARY

THE NATIONAL DAY

A large, meeting of Greek citizens of Wellington and surrounding districts and their friends was held at the PanHellenic Association Booms, Vivian Street, on the occasion of the celebration of their great National Day, March 25—the anniversary of the date of their liberation from Turkish rule.

Mr. Frank- Dyer, Consul for Greece, who was accompanied by Mrs. Dyer, presided, and in his opening remarks congratulated the Greeks on again celebrating in such a fitting manner one of the most important days in Greek history. Mr. Dyer referred to the recent visit of the Greek Archbishop (his Grace Timotheos Evangelinides), and, read a message from the Consul-General" in Australia thanking him as Consul and the Greeks in New Zealand for the welcome they had accorded to the Archbishop. . Stirring patriotic speeches were- delivered in English by Mr. Dennis Boularis, president of the association, and Mr. ;S. Garland, a member of the committee/Mr. Garland being particularly eloquent in his explanation of events that occurred' in the great struggles between the Greeks and Turks many years ago. An excellent speech was delivered partly in English and partly in Greek by Mr. Janice, and another speech, was contributed by. a visitor, Mr. Alexander. Amongst the visitors present were Mr. Duncan (Customs Department) and Mrs. Duncan, the Rev. Mr. Bates Mr and Mrs. Roffe, Mr. Barton Ginger, Mr and Mrs. Alexander, the members of the committee of the Garibaldi Club and many others.

A long programme of musical items and recitations was contributed by Mrs Andrews, Mrs. Crawford, Miss Charles' Miss Webster, Mr. Faleney, Mr. Barton Ginger, Miss Kettlewell, Mr. Ferendios Mr. Walker, Miss Barneo, and Scottish dances by Miss Vardi.

thanking Mr. Dyer for presiding at the meeting Mr. George George referred to his long consular service of nearly thirty years, and thanked him on behalf of the Greeks of New Zealand for the interest he had always displayed.

Refreshments and Greek national dances brought a very pleasant function to a. close.
