SUEZ CANAL CHARGES
MOVE EOE REDUCTION
STEP TO WORLD RECOVERY
LONDON, March.' 2-i.
Asked in the House of Commons whether the Government would consider ax-ranging an international review of the Suez Canal charges on the ground that they' were prejudicial to world recovery, the President of the Bpard of Trade^Mr. W. Eunciirian, replied that the charges were continually under consideration. "The seven nonpolitical directors and three official directors nominated by his Majesty's Government will bo prepared to agree to any reasonable reduction," he said. Mr. Kuncfman added that the ,Government's representatives had already called the attention of the board to the fact that British, cargo boats were finding it cheaper to use the Cape route. .
Advocating League intervention, Sir Arnold Wilson, at' an Individualist luncheon in London, earlier in the month, described the Suez Canal Company as a parasite on the growth of the shipping industry. Its average dividends of 40 per <senfc were sharply compared with the agreement with the shipping companies in 1883 to reduce transit dues on loaded vessels to five francs a ton when the dividends reached 25 per cent. , .
