THE CAPELET STYLE
CLIMAX IN PARIS
Capelets may have sounded simple up to date, but begin to become intricate under the Lucien Lelong influence. They are made in plain dark lainage to go with exclusive printed crepe de chine frocks, a plain tone being chosen from the darkest one in the print, and there are velvet capelets which may show fox-fur borders. In fact, capelets of every type mark a trend for afternoon and evening gowns (states a fashion writer to the "Daily Telegraph"). This trend is destined to bring about a change from the short and bloused jacket lines of past seaBons. Lainage short-elbow-capelets worn with these frocks frequently have slim wrap-over under-jackets which just reach the silhouette below the hips. This type of capelet jacket invariably has fur placed round the cape hem outline. . "
Collar-capes for evening wear mark a higher elbow level falling in perfect circumference from necklines. Little intricacies lurk beneath this apparently simple trend, pink and mastic narrow stripes being woven through black Duchesse satin and splay forth in a flat sun-ray effect. This is displayed on a black satin evening gown. A design in white pique shows a deep flat hemmed border over the upper arms and on the front which crosses to one side, where it fastens by a strap into a buckle. The pique is an unusual contrast to a dinner gown of black lace with high neck and short sleeves. This shorter shaped capelet line is followed for a black and white spotted cotton gown with an organpleated frill of-white edging, a new sequin styled fabric top, closely meshed and massed with gun-metal pellets resembling "shot:"
These are all the simple varieties in cape styles, others being designed in vivid or subdued tonings like amethyst to go with orchid pink satin. Bright green velvet in one instance matches a-broad green leaf motif next scarlet on a white ground. ' This cape is bordered- with a line of osprey which bristles through the feathery fronds. An identical trimming appears in brown, but round the neckline of a brown velvet cape model. Geranium red corduroy velvet takes yet another form with rolling sleeves and'the back caught into the waist through the medium of long tie-ends that stream from a centre front bow fastening.
