The anticyclone is passing eastwards and since last night an intense westerly depression lias advanced rapidly over the Tasman Sea on to the South Island. As a result, northwest winds have become strong and squally in and south of Cook Strait and there has been rain in parts of Westland and Otago. A few misty showers have also been reported in the Auckland province, but generally fine weather has continued to prevail, with rising temperatures.
