RAID ON CABARET
SLY GROG-SELLING
FINES OF £10 IMPOSED
A police raid on tho Ambassador Cabaret, in Cuba Street, on March 4 resulted in Cissio Mj'ra Brough and John Harrison being charged before Mr. E. Page, S.M., at the Magistrate's Court today with selling liquor without a licence. Pleas of guilty on behalf of both the defendants were entered by Mr. W. Perry. . The defendant, Mis. Brougli; said Detective-Sergeant lievell, was for many years licensee of various hotels in tho city. In tho later stages Harrison had been her barman. Last year shd gave up hotelkeeping to take on a cabaret. One was started in Bond Street, and it was then moved to Cuba Street. It came under the notice of the police that .liquor could be purchased at the Cuba Street cabaret, and as a result constables were sent there on two occasions. Liquor was purChased by them at tho usual rates.
On March 4 a raid was carried out by Senior-Sergeant Scott, and in the office of the cabaret there was found a suitcase containing - about a dozen bottles of beer, a quarter of a bottle of whisky, a number of small glasses, and a bowl in which they could be washed. During the time she was hotelkeeping, said Mr.. Eevell, Mrs. Brough was fined several times for after-hour trading, but nothing was known against Harrison.
In asking for lenient treatment on behalf of the defendants, Mr. Perry said that the liquor had been sold in the office and not in the other part of the premises. The amount of liquor seized showed that the selling was not extensive. Mrs. Brougli, he said, had given up the cabaret and was now out of employment. She had been in the cabaret for some three months, and it was not until February 20 that' any complaint -was laid against her.
-The Magistrate fined each of the accused £10 and made an order for the confiscation of the liquor seized by the"police. He directed that it should be sent to the Wellington Hospital for administration to patients.
