MCGIRR BENEFIT MATCH

At the drawing of stumps at the Basin Reserve last Saturday the two final matches in the Wellington Cricket Association's senior competition were in a very interesting position after an exceptionally entertaining afternoon's cricket. Tomorrow afternoon's play, therefore, should be well -worth watching, with each of the four teams, three of which have a chance of annexing the title, striving for victory.' On the No. 1 wicket Hutt will be batting in reply to Petone's big score of 424 for seven wickets, and with prospects of another good wicket, Hutt should be capable of coming well within reach of their objective, even if they do not reach it. On the neighbouring wicket the result of the Wellington-Kilbirnie match is very open. The first five wickets of each team fell for practically the same number of runs. Kilbirnie, who batted first, subsequently carried their score to 183 and Monteath and Ell were well ou the way to retrieving Wellington's position at stumps, having added 50 runs for the sixth wicket. The gate proceeds of the finals are being devoted to the H. M. McGirr Benefit Fund, which has been organised with a view to giving the Wellington public an opportunity of showing in practical form its appreciation of what has been done for the game, not only iocally, but for the Dominion, by one o£ the greatest' all-rounders this country has produced. •
