Growth should be rapid and seedling crops should not bo allowed to get crowded. \ pabbages and cauliflowers planted now should come away with very, little check. Dip the tops of the plants in a solution of arscnate of 'lead before planting. To protect tomatoes from attacks of caterpillars, spray the plants with arsenate of lead. ■ • To hasten ripening shorten back some of the foliage which is shading the fruit. Sow down in blue lupin any vacant, plots not required for immediate cropping. ' Keep leeks ana celery free from weeds. "Water at frequent intervals during dry weather. Lift and store onions, potatoes, etc. Pumpkins and marrows should also be harvested. THE FLOWER GARDEN. The earlier hardy flowering spring bulbs and roots are planted the better. Plant now anemones, ranunculas, iris, narcissi, ixias, tritonias sparaxas, etc. Boarded irisis may be lifted, divided, and re-planted. AVell-drained soil aiid plonty of lime suit these plants. The rhizomes should be barely covered. _• Hardly spring-flowering annuals may be sown in the open "round in favoured localities. : Plaat out seedlings of calendulas, iceland poppies, larkspurs, stocks, Canterbury, bells, and other hardy plants. Allow room for the plants to develop without crowding. • Sow sweet peas in prepared soil. Protect the young seedlings, when they appear, from the ravages of slugs and snails by sprinkling soot or allum about them. Chrysanthemums require attention. The buds are liable to be damaged by caterpillars. Hand-picking is the only satisfactory way of dealing yith these pests. z Dahlias still continue to flower, and will do so if all dead blooms arc removed and the plants kept well supplied •with water. Liquid! manure will help to keep dahlias blooming. Apply once a week after watering.
