OLD MASTER FOUND

During an overhaul of the Leeds Avt Gallery, instituted by Mr. John Eothenstein since his appointment as director, a.large canvas was found in the cellars, where it had been lying for over fifty years. The picture, "The Martyrdom of St.' Sebastian," is belioved by Mr. Kothehstcin to be the work of a Spanish master of the seventeenth century. It was exhibited at the Leeds Exhibition of Arts antl Manufactures in 1875 as "attributed to Bartolome Esteban Murillp (1617-52)," but it is now considered that the style more approaches that of Bibera (or Spagrolctto)/ a'pupil of Michael-Angelo. After the exhibition the picture had been presented' to tho Corporation of Leeds by Mr. L. Wedderburn, but .had since been lost sight of. Mr. Kothenstein states:. "So far as can be ascertained, w<} have no record of it,'? _~
