THE KARAKA
In sonio seasons the karalca in Wellington is late, but this has been an early season for all native trees, and tho karaka berries woro dropping in February. Mr. W. 11. Donton, 324 Tho Terrace, writes:—
"Tho season has been exceptionally favourablo to tho karaka, with its fine dark green foliago, and, as a resmt, the larger trees havo boon carrying a great crop of berries. This abundance gives a chanco to add to their number, and they grow well in this district. "Nature's method, that of placing them on the soil, appears to givo the best results; if just, pressed lightly in place, and then covered with a little decaying, grass to hold tho moisture, tho seed will burst, and send -down a long tap root. Of those which grow naturally, the seed; is generally found free of th 8 soil, and they arc difficult to lift without damaging the root, so try the seeds in tho places you want them to grow.
"When once they get a start thoy grow quickly, and the foliage is well worth while; they stand cutting later on, if growing higher than, 'required, after which thoy soon recover, sending out a Dumber of beautiful shoots. "If seed is not readily obtainable tho writer will gladly supply it. The seeds were dropping from tho trees as early as February, and can bo placed in position at any time."
