POSITION IN JEHOL
THREE ULTIMATUMS
EXPECTED FROM JAPAN
SHANGHAI, February 15. \ While it is reported that the Japanese already have delivered an ultimatum to Tang Yu-lin, Governor of Jehol, requiring his submission, P6king reports expect that three ultimatums will be delivered^—one to Tang Yu-lin from Manchukuo, another to Chang HsuehLiang GeneraL Moto,; the Japanese pommanderdn-Chief, and the third from Tbkio' direct to Nanking—all demanding the complete withdrawal of Chinese troops from- Manchukuo and giving a time limit, . The Chinese are unlikely to-comply, and,-therefore, it is expected that the invasion - of Jehol will commence on February 27; From the tone of-'-'-the Press and semi-official comment on the- League Coirimitte"e" of Nineteen recommendations for a: settlement of the Manchuriaii dispute it appears likely that China will accept the outlined basis-of settlement, especially since China's sovereignty in Manchuria is reaffirmed in unmistakable terms. ' Nevertheless, considerable apprehension exists in Nanking regarding the League's ability to enforce; tho decisions, especially, as Japan's reply announces a determination to continue the recognition of Manchukuo, even to the extent of antagonising all the League members. .Meantime tho Chinese attitude is stiffening, with ofiyjial and semi-official warnings and exhortations to the na-tion-to prepare for the worst, since the League's intentions are good but its recommendations are;impracticable. Public bodies and officials everywhere are announcing that they are preparedto'make any sacrifices to prevent further. Japanese aggression. Large sums of money are pouring into Nanking for the national defence.
