CLYDE QUAY SITE
FIRE STATION QUESTION
:. PROTEST
Considerable discussion took place at an executive meeting of- the Ratepayers' Association, this week upon the proposal of the Fire Board to acquire a site for a new fire station at Clyde Quay, in preference to 7 the sites offered to the board by the City Council. The action of those councillors who opposed the proposal of purchasing the Clyde Quay site was favourably commented upon, and it was decided that the Ratepayers' Association should support 'the stand, these councillors had taken. '''",' A special committee, was; appointed to go' into the matter, and the f ollowingletter was sent to the 'Loans Board by the: secretary of the association :— "On behalf of the Ratepayers' Association,-! have been instructed to lodge formal protest to a loan being granted to the "Fire- Board for the pur-' pose of acquiring ' property" at 7 Clyde Quay. The grounds, for objection are: (1) The waste to the city in acquiring land from outside :owners when'tho city has suitable land to'offer .from its own freehold; (2) the added burden which will be placed upon ratepayers at a time' when, tho finances of the city are short and likely to be more so in the near future."- ,-..■•.
