BRITISH MERCHANT NAVY UNIFORM
(To the Editor.) V .Sir,—l should like to dtaw your attention to an obvious error in the production of (an otherwise excellent film now being shown in Wellington. \ It is within the realms.-, of probability that' a ship's officer—some thirty >. years ago—did visit a public bar in his uniform, but it is a sheer impossibility for it to have been/in the style shown in this picture. This style is that of the standard uniform of the British MerchantV : Navy, approved by his Majesty, .the King, by : an.'Order in Council in 1919, for the use of. all ratings afloat, and in recognition of .their great work, during, the war. ' Although this uniform has not. been universally adopted afloat, as most companies still prefer their own distinctive livery,-yet it remains the only official dress for use in the service. Consequently, it seems rather a pity that one of the characters, acting as a junior officer in pre-war days, should have been dressed m the official uniform of a master m the Merchant .Navy of the present time.-r-l am, etc., . ■ ' - CHARLES STRONG.
