AURORA AUSTRALIS

A correspondent writes as follows to the "Otago Daily Times":—On Saturday night, at 9.30, from tho. ocean side of Purankauui. I observed a white flash of light far out on the horizon, about east-south-east. This . was followed about every three minutes by red flashes, varying in intensity from- a faint lighting of the sea to a lurid burst of colour which lit up a large bank of clouds lying above the horizon. A blue whirling light was seen north of this. The flashes seemed to come almost alternately from two separate points, shifting slightly from time totime, and resembling more than anything else a broadside of Cannon, but without, the.noise. They grew fainter as the night wore on until about 11 p.m. only very occasionally would an extra large flash bo seen, and at last they died away altogether. The most likely cause of these lights appears to bo a display of tho aurora australis, although there, may be another solution.
