HANDLING OF SLAG
WATERSIDE DISPUTE
WORK UNDER PROTEST
(By Telegraph.—Press.Association.)" NEW PLYMOUTH, February 14/ The men who yesterday ceased unloading basic slag from, the Port Napier resumed this morning:-'under protest. The trouble was due' to a claim.- for extra pay made in the morning by the ehoeters, who fix the tarpaulins over the tops of the loaded trucks. The basic rate of pay is 2s ..an hour.. ... An extra sixpence was paid under the old award when basic slag was landled, but under-the<new award this was not provided for the sheeters. _ The dispute arose over an interpretation of--tile'hew award, the. employers contending/[that the sheeters do not ae-tually-handle; basic slag, and the men holding that, there are occasions when the sheeters do handle basic slag, Le., when .makin-g a--ridge in the centre of the truck'in order to insure the load being kept dry. The : elaim was made a_ 'dispute'and. referred to the local disputes committee,[but--when "no agreement was reached it was decided to refer the matter to the National Disputes Committee for an interpretation.
