LOCAL BODY REFORM
Councillor F. Campbell stated last evening at the Lower Hutt Borough Council meeting that he hoped the reform of local bodies in New Zealand would be placed on the agenda paper of the municipal conference. There were far too many local bodies in New Zealand, and if the Dominion was going to rehabilitate itself this reform would have to be carried out. The proposal should come from the local bodies themselves, as it would be a difficult question for the central Government' to initiate. The reform would Save a tremendous amount of money, and would result in increased efficiency. He hoped the reform would come before he retired from local body work. The Mayor (Mr. W- T. Strand) strongly suppoited Councillor Campbell, and said New Zealand was the most overgoverned country in the world. ' Councillor Jlcßain: Would you say misgoverned meant the same thing? "Yes, I would," replied Mr. Strand. "I think at least half the local bodies should commit suicide." "Would you say the same about the central Government?" asked a councillor. "I think it could easily be reduced to two-thirds of its present size," said the Mayor.
