EDUCATION BILL

CLAUSE 4 OPPOSED

(From Our Own Correspondent.) NELSON, February 13. Strong opposition to- Clause 4 of the Education Amendment Bill, which gives school committees power to suspend a teacher for neglect of duty or neglect of a lawful demand, was expressed at today's meeting of the Nelson Education Board, and it was decided to strongly protest agaiust that section of the BUI. After the secretary had read Clause 4; the Hon. W. H. Mclntyre said that the proposal was not justified. He mentioned the position which might arise in a small backblocks place if a committee showed partisanship against a teacher. He declared that the boards at present could discipline a- teacher if necessary. Mr. Harkness said that teachers were servants of the. board and not employed by the committee. The clause would result iv a position in which the board appointed tho teacher and tho committee could suspend him. It was decided to protest strongly against the clause, to circularise the protest immediately to all boards in the Dominion aud to the Educational Institute, and if the Bill is referred to committee in the House to send a representative to give evidence against it.
