MIDLAND AND UNIVERSITY

Some- good cricket was provided by Midland in their match with University on the Kilbirnie Reserve. On the first day University had been dismissed for 228, and Midland had replied with 81 fop no wickets. Midland set out to consolidate the position on Saturday, and so well did they succeed with the bat that with 324 runs for the loss of only four wickets they were able to declare. Batting a second time, University made a poor showing, but lasted just long enough to prevent Midland from registering an outright' win. The Midland opening batsmen, Baker and Standidge, were not separated until the total had reached 137, Standidge then being dismissed after a splendid, though not chanceless contribution of 66. Tindill. Dustin, and O'Neill each made useful additions to the account, with Baker keeping going in something like his old style. Baker, who at one'time held the record for the number of centuries scored by a batsman in local senior cricket, carried his bat for 142—a really fine performance, and a welcome return to form by a player who has a wonderfully fine record in senior cricket. University's second innings was little more than a procession of batsmen, with Cleverley doing most of the damage and O'Neill lending good support.

The side made only 105 runs, to which small total Oeborn, Blandford, Paetz, and Tricklebank were the principal contributors. Cleverley's effective medium-paced bowling accounted for six wickets at less than 10 runs apiece. Time did not permit of Midland again taking strike for the 10 runs required for an outright win.
