DAVIS CUP STANDARD
PLENTY OF PRACTICE NEEDED
U.S.A. .CAPTAINS COMMENT
(By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post.") -AUCKLAND, February 12. That New Zealand tennisl should soon reach Davis Cup standard was. the opinion expressed by Air. Wilmer L. Allison, captain o£ the American lawn tennis team, "which concluded its brief Dominion tour with a victory over New Zealand in its second test match here on Saturday afternoon. "Your players are up to that standard now, as a matter of fact," added Mr. Allison. "All they require is plenty of practice in the world's class.
"We had seen Andrews and Malfroy abroad, and knew how good they were, and so Tve were not altogether surprised to find such a high standard prevailing in Net? Zealand. Of course, I have not seen a great deal of your tennis, and am speaking of my acquaintanceship with your players in the two Test matches we have played."
The American captain spoke, in glowing terms of the doubles play of C. Angas, of Canterbury, who with Andrews gained a victory over the world's champion pair in Wellington last Wednesday. While Andrews had played well on that occasion, Angas was the outstanding player, and given opportunities Mr. Allison predicted that Angas would quickly reach the very highest grade in doubles play. "I should like to say how much'we appreciated playing on your splendid grass courts," continued Mr. Allison. "The Adelaide courts are the finest in the world, being better than Wimbledon, and the courts we played on in Wellington and Auckland were not far behind Adelaide. I think this is probably due to the fact that you have a much longer grass season than we experience in America."
