OBITUAEY

MR. E. J. ROSE

Mr. E. J. Rose, "Balyncgal," Tipper Plain, Masterton,- died early on Saturday morning. ■ . Thejatc Mr. Rose was born in Wellington in October, 1866, and was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Rose. In his young days he was a member of the D Battery, and was one of the champion, scullers of the Dominion. He represented New Zealand in the (shampion pairs and champion fours in sculling from ISBB till 1890. He was a life member of the Wellington Bowing Club. In Wellington he followed the occupation of carpenter and builder. The deceased went to Masterton in 1892, and took up farm land at Wangaehu. Later he went into partnership as an architect with Mr. M. E. Varnliam. He retired from the business in 1910, and took up land on the Upper Plain, which he farmed up till the time of Ms death. He was a member of the Board of Governors of Solway College, was for many years chairman-of the Upper Plain Irrigation Committee, an enthusiastic bowler, being a former president of the Masterton Bowling Club, arid was a'member of the Oddfellows and Masonic lodges. The late Mr. Rose was held in high esteem for his many personal qualities, his integrity, genial disposition, and generosity making for him a host of friends. He is survived by a widow, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. E. D. Dagg, but there is no family. Mr. Percy Rose, of Masterton, and Mr. H. Rose, of Wellington, are brothers of the deceased, and Mr. Eandolph Eose, the runner, is a nephew.
