OIL FROM COAL
ADMIRALTY CONTRACT
ONE YEAR'S SUPPLY TO NAVY
(Received 11th February, 10 a.m.) LONDON, 10th February.
The first, order of its kind in naval history was given by the Admiralty for one year's bulk supplies of oil made from ■. British coal, marking a most notable development of the oil-from-coal industry. The contract, placed with Low Temperature Carbonisation, Limited, follows two years' secret research by the company's and the Admiralty's experts, after which the final specification of coalite and oil, fuel was perfected. Exhaustive trials made on the destroyer Westminster indicate that the cruising radius is increased compared with petroleum oil, which' is vitally im r portant from the naval standpoint: The company claims that if the smokeless fuel and oil-from-coal industries continue to develop normally, the day is not far distant when the Navy could rely exclusively on British sources for oil fuel.
