Ode in commemoration of the Jubilee ot the Wellington Girls' College, 1883----1933. "LUMEN ACCJPE ET IMPERTI." Sonio tako the splendid sun for guide, And some a distant, beckoning star, A river swift, an oceiin wide. To follow, faithful, from afar; And some the sky, a bird, a tree, A hJll, a road, a song, maybe, i Tor us, It's Lumen Accipe ot Imperti. In undent lands the halls of. learning rise In proud, enduring piles of Mcd stone, , And scholars daily: lift' their studious eyes To towered walls, in age and. reverence grown. Wide fields there , are, stretching in. distance green, , , ' ' ' Where youthful, limbs are trained, and hearts 'are fired;- ■ ■ .:■.,- And spreading trees, with silver streams, bo- . tween, . ■ ' • v ..' Where' youthful minds are taught, and souls • insplredi . ; , i ■ • ■ ■ So, nursed in beauty, peace, tranquillity. Some go forth thence to',make our people great; Some dream their dreams, and glorious visions see; ' . ■■ • ■ Some nobly serve who only stand* and wait; Intent through life to spread tlie light they gained, ■ •..-... . . . . White.; truth .and intellectual honesty, The wisdom that's by light alone . IV them it's Lumen Accipe et linperti. ■ And now, to-day, .we.of-the .school,1 rejoice; And here are met, diverse in. years' and ways To hall the school,' arid lift one filial voice In thanks and pride, and bring' duo meed of -.praise; •■'■■ ■ ; . And in I these doubly loved unpillared halls Old friends, old days regain, our. youth renew; In confines of these mellowed wooden walls Our little span or fifty years review. Our fifty years 1 our first half-century I Brief moment in a nation's life, and yet, So- fuU of labour, struggle, victory. That not whole lives could pay our sum of debt ■'••■ : To those who boldly In those days maintained Learning's the nation's first necessity, Enlightened women, girlhood wisely'trained. Who held It's Lumen Accipe et Imperil.. In Jubilee the school triumphant greets Her fellowship; acclaims her company In scattered lands; and in communion meets A vaster host, of sainted memory. In'jubilee she takes the light from those Who held It. high, and through their day Kenned Its beams, till now It purer glows, And' shines In. wider and mtensor ray. In jubilee she hands It on; that youth Slay walk with banners brave and vision, clear, Alay stand uncowed andr fearless for .the truth, With, steady purpose of the pioneer.
