HOW ROSES TURNED RED
—; (Original, by"Koyal Star," aged 15.) Oncer;upon a time, many years ago, there lived a maiden fairer.; than any flower on the earth. Her name was Summer. She was .fairer than her three other, sisters,./ Autumn^ .Winter, ■ and Spring. Spring-was also very beautiful, but not quite so beautiful as Summer* . It was the timo when every rose in the world was pure ivory white. They were indeed very beautiful, .and not jbne person in the kingdom.'coiild -pickwhich was the fairer, Summer or tho rose. » . The roses were very conceited flowers, especially the ones '-which, grew by the pond, as'they could bend their beautiful heads and see their reflections in the clear glassy water. ..""We are, of course, the most beautiful things in the world. Summer has not the beautiful scented petals that we have," they would say to each other. - One day news arrived that a wizard w->s coming to choose the fairest thing in the kingdom. • "Ah," said the roses, "we are sure to be chosen." But the roses were mistaken.Said the : wizard: ' "Summer is" by far the loveliest thing,'with her red lips, her grey eyes, her pink cheeks, and her golden hair." : ' ':■■ When the f oses'heard that,, spine turned pink with anger.- One rose bush was actually crimson, and another yellow with envy. One bush did not hear who' was the fairest, and that, bush remained a. beautiful cream; -■ .
