"PERSONAL VIEW ONLY"

NOT THAT OF HIS CLUB

"The statement made- by Mr. G. Gould, president of the Canterbury Jockey Club, in explanation of a letter that was given publicity in the House of Bepresentatives on Thursday, must be considered explanatory of his own personal views only, and not those of the Canterbury Jockey Club, or of clubs generally, or of the New Zealand Eaeing Conference or the New Zealand Trotting Conference," points out Mr, H. E. Sellers, secretary of the Eaeing Conference. "All these bodies are strongly in favour of the reinstatement of the doubles totalisator, the further extension of ordinary totalisator facilities, and the effective abolition of bookmakers."

Eef erenee to the records of the Conference, moreover, would show that Mr. Gould is not justified in taking to himself the credit of having moved "at about w the same time (i.e., 1929) . .-. that clubs should be permitted to run both 'win' and 'place' totalisators."

The notice of motion, was a remit from the Canterbury Jockey Club to amend the rule on dividend distribution, and it was moved by Mr. H. *A. Knight, not by Mr. Gould, who actually was not present at that, annual meeting of the conference.

Mr. Knight's motion was not one for the introduction of win-and-plaeing betting as it is generally now understood. It was one for the continuation of the old mode of distribution, with the addition of a special win pool. The motion read: "In the event of five or less numbers being allotted on the totalisator, the dividends shall be paid on the first horse only. In the event of the numbers.allotted exceeding five, the dividends shall be paid in the proportion of 75 -per cent, on the first hors© and 25 per cent, on the second horse. But it shall also be permissible to received investments on the totalisatoi' for an additional and separate pool, which shall be paid out in dividends on the first hoise only." The motion was negatived. ~~
