PRICE OF SUGAR
CONCERN" AT INCREASE
Some of the largest manufacturing confectioners in Wellington expressed concern to-day at the incroase of id a lb in the price of sugar. Tho proprietor of one firm who uses thousands of lbs of sugar a year told a "Post" representative that it was a serious matter for manufacturers. He intimated that the increase would be passed on to the consumer in certain classes of confectionery. It would probably be left to the Manufacturing Confectioners' Association, however, to say what the increase would be. "Until they make some move I cannot say what attitude my firm wiH adopt, but we will definitely pass on the increase," he said. Some sweets were almost 100 per cent..sugar, and the price of these would be increased more than for sweets containing other ingredients. The manager of a firm which manufactures frozen products also intimated that the increase would be passed on. The consumer would probably not be called upon to pay more for the goods, he said, but the retailer would suffer. His firm, he said, used 100,0001b of sugar a year, and the id increase a lb represented £208.
