EMPLOYMENT IN BRITAIN
IMPROVEMENT IN MINING
(British Official Wireless.) ; BUGBY, 7th February. Tho Ministry of Labour announces that on 23rd January there were approximately 9,285,000 persons in employment in Britain. This was 17,200 fewer than the month before arid 76,000 fewer than the year before. The decline iri employment occurred chiefly in industries which normally experience a setback' in January, of' which the principle are building, public works, contracting, distributive trades, the tailoring industry, and hotel, boarding-house, and road transport services. .-'..■ : ' The most important industry in which an improvement was shown .was coalmining. On the sa_e date the number of men, women, boys, and girls wholly unemployed, temporarily stopped, and normally in casual employment totalled 2,903,06?. This was 179,778 more than the number On the registers a month ago. The figures include all persons registered as unemployed, Whether in receipt of benefit or transitional payments or'not.
