JOTTINGS IN GENERAL
With the adoption o£ the win-and-place iotalisator. at Ellerslie, all four' principal cities in the Dominion have now applied the system to their immediate meetings. The win-and-place system was in use ht all three race meetings held to-day, and it is reported from the North that the Rotorua stewards may yet make a lastminute change for their meeting at the week-end. With small, fields, the win-and-place system would hardly have been worth while at the Marlborough Meeting opening to-morrow, but the club has given its patron's as many dividend* as possible by providing for two dividends in fields of five or more starters. This change applies to galloping eyents only,'as it cannot at present be made under tho Rules of Trotting. Gay Lap has, been scratched for the Tourist Handicap at the Rotorua Meeting on Saturdays Cadland, who bled when racing at the Auckland Suifamer Meeting, has been thrown out o£ work. His spell will be a fairly long one. Speedmint, a tragic failure in the Takapuna- Cup last mouth, is among those left in Saturday's Rotorua Cup, but she will not take her place in the field unless the sting is out of the ground. Great Emblem, another acceptor, is a similar case.' a ■__ Hazelman, one time private trainer to _Mr. C. Elgar, has been granted a -trainers licence again, and he is starting off with a yearling by Black Ronald from Constantia, who will race as _ash Ronald. When Black Ronald'won the .New Zealand Derby he was trained by Hazelman. Consent is at -resent having a short a _ * ■*- ™*'* BOon be back in work Another attempt is to be made to convert him to tbe hurdling game, and if he takes to it better than he did during his brief term in the role last winter he should win high honours, for he is brilliant, and can carry weight. It will be remembered that he ran off every day at the Wellington 1 Winter Meeting. Mr. A. G. Mabee, secretary of the Auckland Trotting Club, ,has been granted six weeks' leave of absence, and on 3rd May will leave on a visit to his native country, Australia, from which he has been absent for 30 years. Cross-country events form a''strong feature in the programme of the Kiverton -lacing Club at Easter. On the first day __ there will be two steeplechases, one for hacks and one open, -nrith >a similar- programmeon the second day, while on the tuii-d day there will be an open' event. The Great Western Steeplechase, on the first day, has a stake of £350. ■'■'.'' This date Will fit in with the conclusion of .He Auckland provincial .circuit, as-the Cambridge .Trotting. Club will race on 7th M -_-_,c' newly-formed Rotorua Club on 20th May.
