Sydenham Clarke, -was bora in 1848, ' and entered the Royal Engineers in. i 1868. He served in the Egyptian Ex- f •pedition in 1882, and the Sudan Expedition in 1885. "He-was-Governor'■ of Victoria 1901-04, Secretary to the Committee- of Imperial Defence 1904-07; and Governor Bombay 1907-13. ■ -
