The Hon. W. F. Mclntyre asked the Government whether it would recommend the Hallways Board to include coal among the items on which a 15 per cent, reduction .in railway freights had been made.
.-• The-Minister of Education (the Hon. E. Masters) that it was regretted that the Government could not accede to the request. The Hon. C. J. Carrington moved that, a return be laid on the table showing the number of retired Government employees who were now drawing superannuation allowances or pensions from the State exceeding £249 per annum, and who were at the same time obtaining salaries or wages from positions in private employment, which positions otherwise would be held by capable persons not in receipt of such Government assistance, and many of whom were unable' to obtain employment. He said that it was never intended that persons should draw superannuation and at the same time compete for work to the detrimont of other members of the community. However, as there was a "difficulty in obtaining the information he desired, he would not press for a return.
The motion was allowed to lapse. '■■The .Hon. Mark Fagan. gave, notice to ask the Government (1) whether it was aware of the abuses being perpetrated" under the Mining Act, whereby huge areas of mineral country are being pegged"and held for purely speculative purposes; (2) if so, was it the intention of the Government to introduce amended mining legislation during the present session in order to effectively prevent the practice referred to. -
