MR. GOMER ARRIVES

CAREER AS AN OWNER

Mr. Charles Gomer, who was recently appointed chairman of stipendiary stewards to the New Zealand Racing Confer-* ence, arrived in Wellington,by the Monowai yesterday, and will commence duties this-'-week at the Taranaki Meeting at New Plymouth.

Mr. Gomer is a native of New Zealand, but while in Melbourne in. 1927. he was appointed chief stipendiary, steward to the Western District Racing-Assoeia-tioh, Victoria, which controls about 130----clubs, with headquarters at Warnambool. He held that position until his recent appointment to his present office. Before going to Australia Mr. Gomer raced horses in the Dominion. He then lived in. Hawera, and among the hprses he owned were JPassin'; Through (in partnership with Mr. R. E. Laurent), Fleeting (the dam of Inflation), Arrowfield, and Skypoint. - ' '

The two last-named were Australian horses. Arrowfield, who was by Cardinal Beaufort, was bought as a yearb'ng by Mr. W. MeA. Duncan, of Wanganui, who passed him on to Mr. Gomer when six years old. His most important success for his late owner was to win ' the Opunake Cup. Skypoint, by The Welkin: and bred by Mr. E. D. Clarke, was purchased by Mr. Gomer himself as a yearling, but, although -he gave much promise when first trained; he failed on the testing ground. ■ ,

Mr. Gomer relates out .Arrowfield that, instead of him, Mr. Duncan might, have bought the great Poitrel. The two colts were running- out in a paddock at Messrs. W. and 'F. A. Moses' stud in New South Wales,-and Mr. Duncan was offered. his pick.. of. .the two at- a certain figure. He chose the colt who was to go down in the racing records as Arrowfield —and -the other, the -then unnamed Poitrel, was left' to. waits, for another buyer, '
