Holinshea, the English "chronicler, writing of the year 1114, records t-Hat "In this year about the Isth day ~pt October^ the sea decreased and shrank from the old accustomed watermarks and coasts of the land : here in this realm. The Thames was so low for'the space of a day and a night that horses^ men, and children passed oyer .it betwist London Bridge «nd the-Tower,-and also under the bridge,--the 'water not reaching above their knees." .
