Charles Laughton plays the part of Charles Sturm, a submarine commander, stationed at a base on the north coast of Africa. He is Insanely jealous of his wife, whom he alleges has been carrying on with his first lieutenant, and acting on his suspicions he has the young officer transferred. Pauline meets the . new first lieutenant under unusual circumstances, and falls in love with him. The commander's suspicions, however, are once more aroused and he conceives the terrible revenge which sends the submarine to its doom. He sets out for the submarine to see his first lieutenant, but Pauline gets there first and warns the man she Is in love with. Then follows one of the most exciting and dramatic episodes seen on the screen. The commander makes it aonear that, the .lieutenant is to blame for the collision that sinks the submarine, but the picture ?™ J! iUI tne c?mmander caught in his own trap, the escape of the others aboard, and tha fulfilment of a romance. .
