RIFLE CLUB CONTEST
SOME GREAT SHOOTING
NELSON, 6th February. Although two small consignments, of this season's export fruit were sent to Welling, ton last Friday and Saturday, the first shipment of any size will be cleared today when, the Nelson, Mapua, and Motueka shipping points will together send forward 7500 cases. The wet weather is at present holding up picking operations. Last evening, after the usual devotions, the -parishioners and many friends of the Rev. Father Seymour gathered at St: Mary's Parish Hall to bid farewell to a Eopular priest.;who .for four years has een stationed in Nelson. ' Father Seymour leaves by to-night's boat to take up his new duties at Wanganui. The Eev. Father J. J. Cullen, B.Sc, S.M., vice-rector of St. Bede's College, has been transferred to Nelson as assistant parish priest. At St. Bede's, Father Cullen was science master and editor of the college magazine. He will begin his work at Nelson in mid-February. ] The solo selector, Mr. T, -Louisson, has chosen the following team to represent Nelson in defence of the: Hawke Cup against West' Coast's challenge, which commences next Friday:—A. Newman, S. Newman, J. Newman, D. L. Freeman, V, Biggs, H. M. McGirr. E. Ralfe, W. Alexander, W. Morgan, W. Max, a*od E. R. Neale. Stewart .".will be twelfth man.
The annual competition for the Ossie Ching Memorial' Cup. was1 lield at the Wakapuaka range on Saturday," when 20 members of the-Nelgon Defence Eifle Club competed'for-the trophy. The ranges were 300. 500. and'6oo yards, seven shots at each, .with two optional gighters;" Good weather conditions -prevailed , throughout the afternoon, and the competitors were evidently in good form. A number of possibles was registered, and a new record established for; the range. .The trophy, was won by H. Jrank'.with a range record score of 103 off the rifle. A. Kenning followed /with-W2* F. Gledhill and F. Shar^ land; each 101; and B. B.: Jones and J. Vite-tta each 100 'off the rifle. H; Frank won. the spoon and feathers for off the riflo, and -F. Gledhill the handicap spoon and feathers. Frank scored* a possible at 300 yards, dropped only one point at 50(V yards, and another' at 600 yards, thus finishing-his afternoon's shoofe with only two shots'off the bull. . At 300 yards, E; Saarland and W. A. Kenning also scored possibles. At 500 yards, N. Mnnssen reached the desired 35, and at 600 yards three possibles were recorded—by B. B. Jones, 1?. Gledhill, and-Manssen, jun. • - ■-.. The Nelson cricket, representatives successfully defended the Newman Shield against Mofueka's challenge by 96 runs. Nelson in the first innings made 186, Stewart contributing a well-made 75. Motueka replied with 151 (R. Bowers 32). J. Newman took four wickets for 54 runs and Freeman three for 26. Nelson's second inmngs produced 193 runs (A. Newman 51, N. Biggs 41). Smith-took five wickets for 39 runs, and Clark-three for 28. Motueka required 229 runs to catch Nelson when the visitors went in for their second innings, but were all out for 133, Stewart taking four wickets for 11 runs off U overs, and J. Newman four for 89.
