MOTHERS' HELPERS

GOOD YEAR'S WORK

"During the year 122 families have been helped, and £224 has been writ-, ten off for free help, said the secretary, Miss Sutton, in her report at the annual meeting of the Mothers' Helpers Society, yesterday when Mrs. E. P. Norman presided over a good attendance.

The report stated that the same enthusiasm that prompted the committee some 14 years ago to start this work for the assistance of tired mothers had been shown during the last year when, like every other organisation, resources had been taxed to the utmost and it had been possible to continue only through drastic reductions in salaries and in working hours. ~ The treasurer, Mrs. ; E.. W. G. Coleridge, reported that in spite of adverse conditions the committee had kept wel witMn its income of £606, two thirds of which had been. raised by jumble.sales, bridge parties, and subscriptions. The election of officers resulted as folows:—President, Mrs. E. P. Norman; treasurer, Mrs. Ernest 'Coleridge; secretary, Miss F. Sutton; vice-presidents, Mesdames McKibbon, Gordon R^id, and M. Anderson; subcommittee, Mesdames Ward, Bayfieldj and Coleridge. A discussion followed as to whether there was the same need for the society's work at present as in the past. A motion to reduce the staff by one was lost. Votes of thanks were accorded Mrs. Norman, Mrs. Coleridge, and Miss Button. The committee expressed gratitude to the Macarthy Trust and to the following for subscriptions:—Lady Myers, Mesdames McParland, Earle, C. Miles, McKibbon, Gordon Reid, Norman, Paish, Norwood, Darling, Herbert, Weston, Macarthy Reed, C. Richardson, M. Anderson, Shirtcliffe, Tripp, M. Burnett, C. Turrell, Halligan; H. Bell, H.
