CHANGES PROPOSED
TJNIVEESITY ENTRANCE
LEAVING CERTIFICATES
The Senate of the New Zealand University approved yesterday, on the recommendation of the Academic Board of a proposal to hold a school-leaving examination in conjunction with the University entrance (matriculation)* examination; and that for the purpose of a school-leaving certificate, which would be granted by the Education Department, certain additional subjects would be added to those of the present entrance examinations.' Professor T. A. Hunter, vice-chan-cellor, said there were some students who did not want to enter a university but who desired to have a schoolleaving certificate, The examination would be conducted by the University, but the leaving certificate would ba granted by the Education Department. The proposal had not yet been finally accepted by the Department, and, whea accepted, it would take some time to work out. ■ Mr. "W. J. Morrell said the secondary schools had for some years past desired the establishment of a system of granting school-leaving certificates. Ha had no doubt that a satisfactory system could be worked out, and he was of opinion that many students "would substitute the leaving certificate for matriculation. Dr. w. Newlands said that one of the objects m separating the leaving from the matriculation examination. was ia order that the standard of the latter might be raised. , ■ Processor Hunter said that ascect was not lost sight of when the chance was being considered. This might bo regarded as the first step to raisin*, thastandard of the entrance examination. The Hon. J. A. Hanan,"vice-chancel-lor, said that the new scheme, if agreed t°, would avoid the possibility of students taving to sit for two examinations—entrance and leaving . The Senate also adopted the following recommendation of the Academi* be appointed as examiners for entrartes provided they take no part ia seS acffl er f ™d *£ do Mt m*rk Sf m P*?TW^ , theip Olra districts.".
