YESTERDAY'S PLAY

HARD FOUGHT GAMES

There were ho surprises at the Mirainar Grounds yesterday afternoon, though the matches on the second day of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Championships were keenly contested in weather which improved as the day progressed. .-..-.

In the men's singles the; match.of the day was that between; Dr. E.B. W. Smyth and D. G. France. Smyth, a -past New Zealand doubles champiouand a Dominion .representative-against Ne-nr South Wales, was playing with that great-command.of shot which used to distinguish him when he was in the very front.runic of New Zealand players, and might easily have taken France to five sets had he not received some bad decisions by the umpire. Smyth was quicker in .finding his game and tool; the first set with- his : wonderful, length and some well-timed excursions to the net. France won the second set, materially aid' ed by the fact that a perfect service ace by Smyth, which would have made the score 30-aIl in the second game,, was given out, and the score went to 15-40 for France to lead 2-0. France was now warming up and worked hard for the third set, but Smyth, after being 0-3, was well on the. way to taking the set. He readied. 4-all and with Fiance serving and the score at deuce Smyth, hit "a passing shot that sailed beyond France, struckthe net, and fell a foot inside . the. side-line, only to be given- out and ;the score called 'vantage in instead o£ 'vantage out. Had Smyth taken this game he might have won .tho setj for his service was to follow ■■ down wind. France, however, won that set and in the last took six games in a row notwithstanding that Smyth was playing better than evei\ The truth was that France came on to,his ground shots and at .the. end was in top gear. : It was a'sparkling match, full "of.Splendid strokes.. -.; ;"•?: -.-.-' A LONG MATCH., - J. J. McCarthy," the Victoriji' College player", ■ .gained .a win -from J. G. A'.Cburt, who is sixth on. the-Canter-' bury "ranking :list;" " The : four sets' took three hours to. play, and McCarthy was hitting-well. A'Court was bothered by the wind and: unable to control his fore- ! hand as well as: usual, but'his backhand, was functioning well. McCarthy led. 5-1 in the "third set,- which he finally won only after'a"long! fight.',. ■ ■~"•:•■..' C. E. Malfroy did not seem to be at" full stretch against the Brougham Hill-player, E. A. Pearce,. and even, looked as if he : might drop the first t,et, in which the score was 5-all. However, after that' he had ' the match fairly well in hand., ' E. D. Andrews was seen in action against M. Gifford-Modre, and together with R. A. Court, the North- Island champion, C. A. Angas and N. R. C. Wilson, had a comfortable entry to the last sixteen of the' championship... . ' Miss M. Wake (Canterbury) had a. long struggle -with' Mrs. 8,-Napier,- a member : of the Auckland representative team, and lost the first set to love. Mrs. Napier was liittirig freely and Miss Wake found . herself .hard pushed to save the match, winning the second set only after a severe struggle. She does not seem to have shown trne. form since, her arrival here. ■'■. Miss D. Nicholls (Canterbury) gained a good victory over Mrs. D. G. France, losing-only-sii games to the steady Weilingtoniah, while another-Canterbury player. Miss ;B. Gouldi Was too accomplished ' for Miss M. Macnssey (Wellington) after ' a slow start. - - - - . . Mts:;H; M. Dykes (Wellington) had ( little-difficulty with Miss "J.E. Ramsay (Auckland), who split a: finger ■ early in the match "and ; was -never happy. V ; MRS. MELODY BEATEN. Mrs; W. J. Melody, who has not been seen, at tournaments this season, lost her match against Miss M. Rutherford (Feilding) after being 5-2. in the third set. Miss Rutherford, a promising player, produced the necessary strokes at the right1 moments and gained a very creditable' win" over her "experienced opponent. ' Two pairs who are among the favourites ■ for the men's doubles' title were seen in action.. N. R. C. Wilson and A. C. Stedmah faced N. Davys and A. Dickie, while C.E. Malfroy and I. A. Seay met K. G. Boddy (Otago) and W. G. Robertson (Tiinaru). The Wilson-Stedman combination was not extended, of course, but Wilson was at his best, Jailing everything within reach, and playing a superlative* game, He ' and Stedman made an impressive team. Malfroy and fieay, on the other hand, were riot very convincing in their cpmbiuatjon after they had won two sets and were 5»2 in the third. " ' ;

In the women's doubles Misses Wbytc (Wellington) and Gould (ChristchurchV de^ feated Miss Marjorie Macfarlane and Mrs. B. Napier, a strong Auckland pair, in straight sets. The dinners led- 5-3 ;u tue first set and then allowed their opponents to square the niateh. But there was iieyer any doubt as to which was th<} -better, more active, and; more dangerous team. : Miss Whyto was in fine form arid was ably seconded ey Miss Gould, whose powerful shots sustained the attack. It was the first time the winners had«played together,'but their understanding was wellnigh perfect. ..':-! : DETAILED RESULTS.; r The 'detailed results of games finalised yesterday after the "Post" went to press are as follows:— .■ .... ■'.'■'■ Men's Singles.
