PROHIBITED IN ORIENTAL BAY

As. q result of complaints of the activities of fishermen netting for fish from the small beach in Oriental Bay, ana leaving on the beach rubbish brought ashore' in the nets, it has been decided by - the Marine_ Department to prohibit netting in this locality from Ist November in each year until the 30th; April following. No fishing by nets is allowed in the waters inside a straight • line drawn from the northeastern corner of the Te Aro Baths to a point on the foreshore approximately 200 yards north-east :of the ■ band rotunda.-Oriental Bay beach is.crowded with bathers daily during the summer season/and in recent years; has become one of. the. most popular beaches round Wellington.^ Tho activities of the fishermen were stated to leave the beach in a dirty state and to interfere with the pleasure of swimmers and those who paddle in the shallow waters. The netting of fish is allowed on other beSches round "Wellington, but the deposit of -rubbish is an offence under the Harbours Act, and the Marine Department' inspectors have been active of late in forcing fisherman to dispose in the proper manner ;of rubbish brought ashore in nets. .
