A COMPROMISE NEEDED

(By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post.") CHEISTCHTJBCH, This Day. Commenting editorially on the Cabinet crisis, the "Christchurch Times" says:— '' The reports from Wellington clearly have some basis of fact or the Prime Minister and the Minister of Finance and others would not have been so guarded in their statements, and it is to bo hoped that this indefiniteness will not continue. In these difficult times it is only natural that views should differ, even widely, but the Prime Minister has proved his ability to effect compromises, and it need not be assumed if any division is threatened that he cannot find a formula that would be acceptable generally. If the difficulty is solely one of reaching a compromise, then it is unfortunate that any suggestion of marked differences has been given publicity; but, if matters have reached a deadlock, then, the best course -would be to allay uncertainty by prompt action. However, Parliament will assemble in the course of a few days, so that an official statement cannot be delayed long. The need for a compromise goes far beyond the specific problems, and;if any section in its zeal for some economic policy risks the danger of political instability, it may findthat it has lost the conditions upon which the successful working of its plans ultimately depends.
