PETONE BOROUGH COUNCIL
The Petone Borough Council met on Monday night. The Mayor (Mr. 0. Mclvenzie) presided, and there were .also present Councillors V. A. Noble, V. E. Jacobson, H. A. Eyder, A. Scholcfield, E. T. E. Hogg, E. Toomath, J. C. Burns, and C. P. 'B'rockclbaiik. - ■ Tlie Petone Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club was granted the use o£ the Ifeereation. Ground on 11th February, sub-ject-to the approval o£ the cricket authorities. The Ngaroma Croquet Club and the Central' Bowling Club are to be invited to a conference to discuss alterations to their grounds. A request from the St. John Ambulance Association for financial assistance was deferred until the estimates are being considered. The Eastbourne Borough Council inquired whether the Petone Council would agree to the placing of a seat near the telephone box at the bus stop in Buick street. A councillor. suggested that Eastbourne should communicate with the owner of a vacant section at the bus stop, with a view to placing the seat there. It was left to the town clerk and the engineer to arrange the matter.■ A letter from the Kaiapoi Borough Council asking for support in an endeavour to have a compulsory reduction* made in bank interest rates was "received", and no action was taken. Permits for buildings t<s' the value of £65 were issued in December, according to the report of the borough engineer (Mr. C. L. Jackson). One case of scarlet fever, one case of diphtheria, and two cases of food-poison-ing were reported to the borough inspector (Mr. W. B. Gongh) in December. On investigation of the food-poisoning cases he found that seven other persons were infected from the same source. The librarian (Mr. S. M. Shortt) reported that during the quarter ended 31st December 23 new subscribers joined the library, and the same number left. The total membership was 258, the same as at the close of the previous quarter. Sixtytwo new books were added during the quarter. The membership oE the juvenile library stood at 49, seven children having joined during the quarter. Councillor Burns expressed disappointment at the small number o£ children belonging to the library.
