STATE OF THE MEAT MARKET.
The New Zealand Meat Producers' Board has received the following cable, from its London office, dated 13th January, advising approximate average prices realised for the week in Smithfield market and London stores, with prices for the week before shown in parentheses:— " New Zealand sheep: Canterbury' and North Island crossbred wethers and maiden ewes, 481b-581b 4%d (4%d), 57-64 5d (4 7-8 d), 65-72 5d (4 7-8 d); North Island, : 48-56 45-8 d (45-8 d), 57-65 5s (4 7-8 d), 65-72 5d (4 7-8 d), 48 and under 3%d (3%d), 48-64 3 l-8d (3 l-8d), 65-72 2 7-Sd (2 7-8 d). New Zealand lambs: Canterbury, second quality, average 301b, 5%d (5%d). New seasons, including downs—Selected North Island brands, 361b and under 7%d, 37-42 7%d; second quality, average 301b, 6%d. Other North Island brands: First quality 361b and under, 7 3id; 37-42, 7&<k second quali.ty, average 30, 6%d. Australian. lambs (new season's): Victorian, first, quality, 361b and under 6 l-8d (6%d), 37-42 5 l-8d (5 l-8d); Argentine lamb, first quality (new season's), 361b and under 5%d (5%d), 37-42 5 l-8d (od).' New Zealand beef: Ox, fores 27-8 d (2%d), hinds 3%d (3%d). Argentine chilled beef: Ox, fores 4%d (3 7-8 d), hinds 59id (4 7-8 d). Australian frozen beef: Ox crops, over 100, 3 3-8 d (3%d) • ox hinds, over 160, 3 7-8 d (3 7-8 d). New Zealand prime porker, pigs, 601b-801b 6%d (6^d) 7 - 81-100 5%d (5%d), 101-120 s&d (sJ£d); New Zealand baconer pigs, 120-160;. 5d (sd). Lamb .market: Moderate demand for new season's, b,ut landings so far being absorbed. .Australian new season's rather affecting our demand owing to difference in prices. Mutton market: Wethers' very firm owing to short spot stocks. Ewes steady, .with prices unchanged. Beef market: More inquiry owing .to increase in prices of Argentine chilled beef. New Zealand porker pigs: Good demand for lightweight, with slightly lower prices for heavyweight.
