UPPER HUTT BOROUGH
The Upper Hutt Borough Council met last night. The Mayor (Mr. A. J McCurdy) presided, and there were also present Councillors T. R. Jameson A Howell, F. P. Keys, J. Blewman, G. H] Guthrie, J. P. O'Flaherty, and M H Hood. Congratulations were extended by the council to those responsible for the recent '^Christmas cheer" effort by which many distressed people were assisted The council supported a resolution passed by the Kaiapoi Borough Council calling for a compulsory reduction in bank interest rates. On the motion of the Mayor it was decided that the 2s 6d charge for working dogs be allowed only on dogs used for rabbiting, driving, and herding. The sanitary inspector reported that one case of tuberculosis had been notified during the period ended 12th January. Several notices bad been issued for the destruction of ragwort, which was fairly prevalent in the borough. The inspector had not observed much .hemlock, but on occasions had issued notices about its baneful effects. Permits for five buildings of a total value of £359 10s were issued in December, compared with permits for three buildings of a total value of £619 for the same month in 1931.
