LOVER OF SWEET AIR.
TARIFF DUTIES
(To the Editor.) Sir, —Sly absence from Wellington during the past week has caused a slight delay in answering the letter of A. E. Mander, which appeared in the "Evening Post" of 16th instant. At the first annual conference, of 'this organisation held in July, 1902, the tariff policy of the union was laid' down, viz., "the abolition of all~tariff duties except those imposed for the purposes of revenue only," and the-union; has-always clung .to this as. its long-view objective 'regarding fiscal matters. . '■ All authorities are agreed that exaggerated tariff barriers are an important factor in the present world chaos^ and that it.•will not pass until material downward revision is made in those policies that are killing trade. . '•'"■.'■'. V- . If a scaling-dowh of tariffs is one of the factors toward recovery, then I fail to see why Mr. Mander'and some local .associations are taking exception to the contents of my letter; Surely every loyal New Zealander wants to see his country, ride on the.waves of prosperity once more. .. To me, Mr. Mander appears to be in a state of hopeless confusion between the domestic market problem and that of the external market. The Farmers' Union does not need or ask for protective tariffs in its home market, but while world tariffs are so steadily growing in intensity, and while the existing world chaos prevails, we are forced to shape our policy for the time being with reference to what others are doing.—lam, etc., '.■'■■ -. w: -j. polson, ; Dominion President, Farmers' Union.
