VOLUNTEER CAMPS
_ Some of 'the statements made in a Parliamentary .discussion on 'the volunteer military camps to' be held this year are disputed by a correspondent, Corporal A. 41. H. Dewar. The writer, holds that Mr. Jones (Dunedin) was wrong in stating that .the camps would cost £10,000 for transport and clothing. The transport is a charge from one Government Department to another, and the carriage of volunteers does not disorganise other train services. Clothing costs little, as only ■ a small proportion of uniforms are discarded as unserviceable. The correspondent also protests against the statement by Sir. Sykes that "many of the young fellows had joined the Territorials because of the camp." The men serving at present are vounteers and proud to help in defence without thought of gain and certainly without the idea of joining for the camp alone. Concerning Mr. Seinple's comparison of defence and unemployed camp pay, the correspondent states that the volunteers j pay £1 a year 'Hnd .wages tax for the I single men's camps. The volunteer camp gives "many unemployed a few shillings, and moreover last; five to eight days, while the unemployed -camps last at least 40 weeks in the year.
Favoured with the warmest day this spring, the Otago Agricultural Society yesterday broke all recent records foV People's Day at the show, telegraphs "The Post's" Dunedin '.correspondent. The attendance totalled over 14,000, and the gate takings, £4!o for two days, were more than rloxible the receipts for both days last year, when tne weather was wet. *•" "
