COOL CHANGE COMING

An intense westerly depression, typical of. the weather at this time of year, is dominating the meteorological situation at present. Strong westerly winds are forecasted to reach gale force at times, but,winds generally will back to the south -within the next twentyfour hours. The weather meantime is likely to be changeable and squally, with showers .in districts with a westerly aspect. Showers will extend, later to eastern districts when, the southerly change takes place. Temperatures will bo, warm to-day, but cooler to-mor-row.

As a result of ■ the depression winds during the last twenty-four Hours have been strong northerlies or north-wester-lies, gale force being reached in many places. The rain has been fairly general in districts with a westerly aspect, and in far southern districts, arid, some of the falls have been heavy. Many places on the West Coast of' the South Island have had over an inch of rain, Arthur's Pass topping the list with 5.10 inches. On' the eastern side of the main ranges, however, little jor no rain has fallen, and the weather' there has remained warm, and dry.- ---■ Auckland had a, fine but cloudy day yesterday, with ar.northerly breeze. " In Wellington the weather was dull and. threatening. A high north-west-erly wind blew all day and throughout the night, the velocity of several gusts reaching 60 miles an : hour. A, gust blowing at the rate of 64 miles an hour occurred at seventeen .'minutes past midnight, and vras, the champion- puff.
