AUDIBLE FOR THREE MILES
From, the foreshores round Sydney a giant voice may be heard—a new giant speaker. This. new. speaker—the largest loud speaker in. the. world—weighs 3i cwt; and is audible for about three miJeSi. It. has? been, mounted on. the top of, the Sydney. Perries, tourist steamer which makes excursion trips on. the harbour-every Thursday. An, idea, of, its., stentorian-, capacity is shown by the fact that the. speaker demands 120 watts of electric power for its. operation, as; compared; with-, two watts used.by the..staßdard,speak.er l of a High-powered radio receiver.
Thenew speaker is too-big--for~ordi-nary amplifying work, and will be reserved for special outdoor occasions, such as head-of-the-river boat races, showground or aerodrome gatherings, and perhaps for controlling street crowds of the magnitude of those seen when the Harbour Bridge was opened.
A lecture will be given to-night before the New Zealand Badio Institute by Mr. Preston Billing on the subject of '' Superheterodynes—Their ' Operation and Servicing." The Kadio Institute extends an invitation to all those interested in. radio to attend.
