MR. AMERY'S WAY
DRASTIC PROPOSAL
(Received 24th November, 2 p.m.)
LONDON, 23rd November.
In the House of Commons, Mr. L. S. Amery (C.) said: "It would not be beyond our capacity to meet our obligations" to the United States if we bad the courage to take the necessary unpleasant steps. We are free both from Free Trade and the gold standard, and we could pay three years' instalments to the United States in the shape of the one hundred millions in gold which are only kept in the Bank of England as a tribute to the old superstition. ' We could then give notice to terminate the Anglo-American commercial treaty in order a year hence to impose special tariffs on. United States goods payable in gold or dollars or we could listen to counter proposals:" .
