THE REGAL ROSE

SEEN AT ITS BEST

TOWN HALL SHOW

The excellent spring- ■weather enjoyed during the last couple of months or so has enabled horticulturists, professional and amateur alike, to surpass all previous efforts in. the production of beautiful blooms,; - hence the Wellington Horticultural Society's Hose Show, opened in the Town Hall this afternoon by the Mayor, Mr. T. C. 'A. Hislop, is one of the best of the many good ones that have been held in recent years. The season has been all in, favour of roses, so entries in' the rose classes are .numerous and the quality superb. The scent of hundreds, and hundreds of the queen of flowers pervades the whole building, and the word gorgeous but inadequately describes the scene. Roses, however, are by no means the only flower claiming attention at the show. Seldom, have there been seen such pansies and violas as are being exhibited, and dozens of other kinds of choice spring and early summer flowers add their quota °f colour and scent. ■ ■ , ■■

The outstanding exhibit is a stand of between 250 and 300 hydrangeas of every shade of colour. These have been grown,-by Messrs. T. Waugh -and' Son, and make a wonderful display. C. F. Pilcher and Son also have a fine exhibit of hydrangeas and lupins. Anderson's carnations, pelargoniums, and calceolarius are likely to attract much ' attention. Another interesting display is that by Evans and Sawyer, the Manakau * growers who specialise in alpine plants. Mr. A. Macmillan and Messrs. Maclean and Archibald also have good exhibits of various plants. Mrs. Charles Haines has a very decorative stand, and Mr. G. H. Clark has a special display of pansies and violas. The Pioneer Club, as usual, has staged a most attractive exhibit, and the City Council's display is a splendid one, some of the roses-in it being quite a feature. The ladies' uecorative classes have attracted numerous entries, and among the many beautiful cut flowers there are to be seen ■ some admirable sweet peas. ; ' •■•.-••• ;

The Tose show is open for to-day only, and it is anticipated that the patronage this afternoon ana evening will be extensive.
